You Were Meant To Be Happy Poem + Life Lessons

5/22/23 Update: I wrote this article in 2019 and a recent life occurrence sparked a poem to go with my thoughts. I am dedicating my new poem to a dear friend of mine whom I love very much. When you are very connected to your friends, you feel their pain and joy. You are in their life to bring them up when they are down and vice versa. May you find peace in our pain.

I also added in some more ideas about my views on happiness. Enjoy the fun and happy photo shoot I did with my husband too!

Whether you are trying to find happiness in your job, your relationships or with life in general, I know you were meant to find it. Here are my reasons on why I know you were meant to be happy plus a poem I wrote on why I think everyone is deserving of being happy every day, with research backing my thoughts.

Life was meant to be happy. Do you believe that? It’s true. I know it doesn’t seem like it when you look around, but it’s true. Life was meant to be happy. You were meant to be happy.—Neale Donald Walsch

A poem about happiness dedicated to a dear friend

You Were Meant To Be Happy

each and every day.

It’s what they say.

You deserve the very best, don’t you know it?

It breaks my heart that other people don’t show it.

You were meant to be happy

Say it with me please

I’ll be down on my knees

…praying for you.

Begin original article originally published 4/18/19:

This week I’ve been reading another one of Neale Donald Walsch’s books titled Happier than God. Some may not pick it up to read simply because of the title. They may think it’s blasphemy, exclaiming “No one could be happier than God!”, but I’m here to say it’s not blasphemy.

I’ve previously read Neale’s Conversations with God series (Books 1-4) and Happier than God recently called my name. I was happy to purchase and read it. His thoughts and ideas are things I often thought about during my Catholic upbringing, but never mentioned or asked questions because that’s not what you did in my home growing up. It was how it was, and that was that.

His books opened my mind to thinking for myself on all things spiritual. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized I like to question things and I often ask really good questions. I sometimes want to ask people questions like “Why, oh why would you continue to attend a church that preaches this and that is “wrong” yet you go out and do those “wrong” things the minute you step out of the church door?”.

Or “Why do you believe that everything written in the bible is 100% “right”…it was written by humans, and humans have the ability to be “wrong”, right?”, or “How come you believe everything those “selected” humans wrote for the bible but don’t believe that someone else (like myself, or Neale or more) could also be “selected” persons to make others think differently….couldn’t this new generation of humans need more text that is more clear?”. Maybe I just did. Oh well. Like I said, I like to question things.

Please read on, even if you are mad about what I just wrote….

It takes a while to read through his books because they ARE NOT light reads. They are the kind of books that I have to read a little at a time, think about, discuss it with someone and then come up with my own thoughts and interpretations on what Neale talks about. Sometimes I agree with what he says and sometimes I don’t, and that’s okay. You don’t have to agree with someone’s ideas 100% of the time.

As a matter of fact, I don’t think you should ever agree 100% of the time with anything anyone says. That’s when cult followings happen, and those NEVER turn out well.

I do agree with many of Neale’s thoughts in Happier than God. I won’t ruin it for you (as you should read it yourself if you are interested), but I will sum up my #1 takeaway from the book in one sentence:

YOU WERE MEANT TO BE HAPPY.

I love that Neale said this because it’s something I’ve always thought, but so many have tried to prove me wrong over and over and over again throughout my life. People have said things to me like “You can’t be happy all the time, Carolyn”, or “Life is a school and humans were meant to feel lots of pain before we become happy” and I disagree with that way of thought.

An article by the New York Times titled “How to Be Happy” can help you understand my thoughts a little more and give a little more guidance on steps you can take to help you find your happiness again.

Little things like a new hairstyle help me to be happy

I agree to the way of thought that you SHOULD FEEL the other feelings such as sadness, anger, fear, jealousy. If you push those feelings aside, you’ll explode! Well, not literally, but I’ve seen people leash out some extremely harsh words and feelings all at once because they didn’t allow themselves to feel them as they came and it was kind of scary.

I’ve actually done that when I was younger (but only when I was poked by a happiness hunter repeatedly, which is not an excuse, but a mere way to forgive myself, as I am only human) and it wasn’t pretty! However, after an explosive event, I’ve learned you should always come back to happiness after feeling everything besides happiness.

I love the suggestion by Sparring Mind about how taking care of yourself is taking care of others and how it’s a good idea to have a neutral third party view your relationship if it’s going sour. A neutral third party could be a therapist and therapy can have amazing results with someone who is ready for help and wants to grow.

Yes, it’s true, there may be pain associated with the other feelings. I’ve written about this numerous times. However, be happy and thankful that you have been given the gift of those other feelings. If you weren’t feeling the other feelings, how do you think you would ever make positive changes in your life.

Now days, when I feel painful feelings, I allow myself to feel them and then I go into “fix-it” mode. I say things like “I am deserving of better” and then move towards a new path. It works for me and I’m sure it could work for you too. You were meant to be happy and deserve to be happy.
